Cobb struggles, but Rays get bats going against Blue Jays
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay opening-day starter Alex Cobb had a tough outing, however the Rays had their best offensive showing of spring training Thursday in a 10-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Steve Souza Jr. and Logan Forsythe homered during an eight-run fifth inning for the Rays, who trailed 3-0 and had not scored more than five runs in a game until breaking through against right-hander Marco Estrada.
Blue Jays starter Mark Buerhle was impressive, allowing two hits and striking out two in 3 1-3 scoreless innings in his second spring appearance. Estrada yielded seven runs and seven hits in two-thirds of an inning, including Souza’s solo homer.
Cobb, meanwhile, failed to get through three innings.
The right-hander breezed through a perfect first inning, but gave up one run in the second and two in the third. He allowed five hits, walked one and fanned four in 2 1-3 innings.
